After a final breakfast with the Whitelock crew, Tracy and I set out for the border. We had a laughably easy time at the border- “where are you going?” “are you meeting anyone?” “have a nice day.” We thought there was no way we’d escape a secondary inspection but we got grilled less than you’d expect entering back into Canada. The first thing we ran into on the way to Bellingham? FIREWORKS because ‘MURICA!
After getting SIM cards from AT&T sorted in Bellingham, it was a short, wonderful drive on the way down to Oak Harbour, WA where we were planning to stay for the night.
We made it to Oak Harbour mid-afternoon, walked around downtown, got a quick bite to eat (sampling local ciders, of course) and sought to get after a workout.
We dropped into Crossfit Amethyst and met the wonderful owners Andy and Katie who welcomed us with open arms, showed us a great workout, and even let us come back to their own house after the workout to shower. We were talking after and thought “they would make excellent Canadians” given how welcoming and friendly they were. Maybe that’s just the Crossfit community, but we were so grateful to cross paths with them. Katie asked me to teach her some Canadian before we left and I blanked at the time, but figured out (what I believe is) a truly Canadian word after: A 12-oz bottle of liquor, for some reason, we call a “Mickey.” – There you go
After visiting with the should-be-Canadians we split a bit of dinner at a local brewery, and went looking for a place to sleep for the night. We were quite understandably, SOL on any regular campsites for the night given that it was Friday of the July 4th weekend. We settled into a cozy corner of the local Walmart parking lot and got some sleep.
That brings us to today! July 4th! We found a cute little playground with a table to have “picnic breakfast” and cooked some bacon. Rocking a full coleman propane stove and a bunch of camping gear at a playground probably looks a bit odd, but to the vandwelling/nomadic crowd it’s a pretty common occurrence.
After breakfast, we set off to Coupville, and brought us our first picture in the #handstandsdownthecoast series we’re hoping to get going.
Fort Ebey State Park is very beautiful, and we’re trying to do the best we can of not rushing anywhere, stopping whenever we can, and not being in a rush to get to an objective or place. That being said, we do have a 1:15pm ferry this afternoon, so we’ll leave it at that and say until next time!
