It started out being a longer day then expected – roughly 37 hours. But hey, I guess that’s how adventures begin.
Monday morning, we dropped Avery off for her week of constant dog playing, and headed up to Edmonton. With some time before our departure, we thought about what there was to do in Edmonton and of course, Waterslides came to mind. So we headed to West Ed. to get in some much needed slide time for Rod.
We arrived at YEG to get in a quick bite and a much need airport beer, before taking on the 6-hour direct flight to Iceland.
Waking up in Iceland – it was dark. We arrived just after 6am, and the airport was bustling. We found our rental car company and hit the road. Being so early we ran into some rush hour traffic, but made it to our hotel no problem. We have become very thankful for our GPS here. Being so early, and check-in not available until 2 p.m., we decided to take a little drive through the city, and the decided with so much time between now and check-in that we would head out of the city to go check out some sights.
Iceland is absolutely breathtaking, once you get out of the city and onto their “Highway 1″, you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere (and you kinda are), with stunning mountain views, all glistening with the fresh snow.
We headed North East, to check out the Great Geysir, and a huge Waterfall Gullfoss, that was mostly frozen but still beautiful. The Geysir, would blow about every 5 – 7 minutes, with multiple little hot pools in and around the area.
At the waterfall, with restricted access to the bottom due to weather conditions, we were only able to view it from the top.
We knew we were in for some driving while we were here, but the drive back home, after being up for that long, was much longer than we anticipated. Getting back to our hotel around 4:30 p.m., settling in and then heading out to grab a quick bite to eat, we managed to stay awake until at least the sun went down.
Heading to bed at 7 p.m. was the best call, after a long day and a little jetlag we needed the catch-up on sleep.
Tomorrow brings another big day of driving and checking out more of the sights and beautiful landscapes that Iceland has to offer.
Until Next Time
