On this adventure weekend we headed out to Kikomun creek, a provincial park located just past Fernie, BC. We headed out Saturday morning to grab a campsite with views of the river and the sense that a few good paddles were in our future.
The weather thankfully held out throughout the weekend, we had some rain and clouds on the drive out, but the skies were beautiful for the afternoon and the next morning.
We grabbed our gear and headed to Surveyor’s Lake for an afternoon paddle. It was a protected lake, and as such was glassy enough for a leisure paddle with the dog. As the training continued I paddled out for a while with Avery still on my knees, but decided to take the chance to stand. She handled it much better this time – I again stayed dry, which is always going to be the challenge each time we go out. She even at the end of the trip was willing to walk up and jump off the end of the board for a small swim back to shore. We are sure in no time she will be climbing onto the board on her own – that is my goal for her.
As the wind started to set in and the temperature dropped, we headed back to the camp for dinner and some relaxing time by the fire.
The next morning before our check out time, we decided that the wind was quiet enough that we try to take the boards out on the Lake Koocanusa. The day was scattered with clouds, but the sun made a few appearances to make for a very enjoyable paddle. Avery headed out on the board with Rod, where he too took his chance of standing while she sat, and watched the bank pass by. Another successful trip where we all stayed dry was in the bag.
We packed up camp and headed for home. Being in the provincial park, you tend to deal with more people, and some times much louder people when you would want.
Thankfully our next few adventure weekends are hidden away in the back country where the majority of visitors are there for the quiet.
Until Next Time,
– Tracy
